There is no shortage of scary news as we’re flooded with updates about the coronavirus pandemic. While this constant stream of unfortunate news has shown us that trying times can bring out the worst in people, we rarely see the good that is brought out in them. During this time of turmoil, many individual citizens have stepped up with offers of monetary and physical support and different organizations have foregone profit to offer free services to those in need. There have also been many celebrities that have put their support in places where it was desperately needed helping to close some of the gaps in our systems and make a huge difference.
Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively - Lively and Reynolds are splitting their hefty donation between two important organizations and two countries. The couple announced on Instagram that they would be donating $1 million in total, half to Feeding America and half to Food Banks Canada. These organizations help to feed low income families as well as elderly people in need of assistance.
Bethenny Frankel – The businesswoman and Real Housewife of New York City is using her disaster relief initiative, BStrong to donate over 1 million of the much needed N95 masks to hospitals that are having shortages. Since the coronavirus epidemic has taken over, individuals have hoarded these masks to protect themselves making it harder for healthcare professionals that need them to protect themselves.
Russell and Ciara Wilson – Seattle was one of the first and hardest hit cities in the United States with the coronavirus and is still struggling to contain it. For Seattle Seahawks quarterback, Russell Wilson and wife Ciara, this hit close to home. The couple is giving back to their community by donating $1 million dollars to Food Lifeline, a local food bank.
Kristen Bell – One of the nation’s issues that the coronavirus has made painfully evident is the number of children who live in hunger in the United States. With school closings, many cities and states had to figure out how to provide meals for their food insecure students. No Kid Hungry helps to alleviate this problem and Bell helped their efforts with a $150,000 donation.
Rihanna – Through her foundation, she is donating $5 million to support medical workers and first responders on the front lines of this pandemic. The $5 million dollars will focus on getting financial support to overlooked communities in the United States, the Caribbean, and Africa. The generous donation will also help provide protective gear for hospital workers and first responders and distribute respiratory supplies in impoverished countries.
Ed Bastian – With social distancing being an important factor in slowing down the spread of the coronavirus, several industries have taken a huge financial hit as business slows. One of the most affected industries is airlines. Delta CEO, Ed Bastian announced that in order to make sure they didn’t have to make any lay offs because of this financial hit, that he would forgo his own salary for 6 months.
Basketball players – Since the NBA announced that it would be suspending the rest of its season to stop group gatherings in an attempt to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, employees of stadiums everywhere were left wondering, where they would earn money. Many basketball players like Zion Williamson and Kevin Love have stepped up and donated money to help cover their wages.
This is just a short list of celebrities that have used their resources to make a powerful impact to help the nation fight this virus and return to normal. Many others have made similar monetary donations while there are a number of celebrities like Josh Gad, John Legend and Amy Adams who have used their talents to help keep parents and their children who they’re now homeschooling and working from home entertained.
